Description: If you knew your time was almost up, what would you do? This is the question Ben, the main character in Andrew Battonâs play, âOr Not To Beâ, wrestles with and itâs the reality of it that ultimately inspires him to perform Shakespeareâs Hamlet. As humans, our âclocksâ are always ticking and most of us donât have a clue about our expiry date. Why is it different when youâre told an approximate end-date for your wander on this green earth? And why do some people choose to spend their lives making/experiencing art? While the topic of imminent death seems like a pretty depressing focus for a play, âOr Not To Beâ brought a candid and intimate perspective. In fact, the play, directed by Julia Haist, shows a lovely relationship between the three characters.
The lead Ben is played by Shawn DeSauza-Coelho; Andrew Robinson tackles Seb, a friend of Benâs and Karen Scobie plays Sarah, Benâs partner. Lisa Currie, stage manager, handled the light and tech at Leslievilleâs RED Sandcastle Theatre for âOr Not To Beâ, which ran for 3 weeks in January.
